California Student Health Insurance Changes
Soon the new rules passed by the Federal Government are going into effect as part of the health insurance reform. Children up to the age of 26 will be allowed to stay on their parents group insurance and children under age 18 with pre-existing conditions will not be denied coverage.
The first part does not make sense in California. Insuring dependents on group insurance in California is almost always the most expensive way to insure a child. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California insurance is much cheaper to cover children with individual polices. This may not be true in other states, but in California individual health insurance is cheaper.
As for the second part of this new legislation I don't see how it won't raise everyones premiums. If Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield have to insure children with medical conditions the expenses will increase with the claims and that will increase everyones health insurance costs. Not until it is mandated that everyone must be covered will there be a chance that premiums will decrease.
